PFA Updates
04/16/2010Dear Parents and Friends,
Thanks to everyone who came to our PFA meeting on Tuesday, April 6th. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 11th, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. at SYIS. The following issues were discussed:
Healthy Living Week: April 19th – 23rd. During this week the focus will be on eating healthy and getting enough exercise and sleep. Plans for the week are as follows:
A bead rewards system to encourage participation in the week’s events. The beads will be exchangeable for small rewards like stickers, toys, stationary… Some of the events include:
- school lunch: earn beads if they try everything
- during recess there will be coordinated physical activity for the children to participate in to earn beads
- the kids will keep different charts throughout the week such as how much sleep they are getting, not watching TV or playing video games, eating balanced meals
Parents are asked to volunteer to help out between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. during Healthy Living Week. Four parents are needed each day to help give out beads and supervise lunch and activities. Please contact Linda Lily at 8912-1177 if you can volunteer for any of the days.
While the focus was on healthy living, PFA felt that the children have access to some unhealthy drinks and snacks at the school’s snack bar and decided to start a petition to remove all sodas from the snack bar throughout the school year, not just during Healthy Living Week. Some parents would like to see all unhealthy snacks and drinks removed. The PFA would like to hear from other parents on their thoughts on what the school snack bar should be allowed to sell. Please contact your child’s classroom representative or Linda Lily to voice your opinion.
Some suggestions from parents for the health of the mind, body and soul:
· teach kids about the consequences of smoking, alcohol, drugs, and of exposure to violence and sexual content in movies and on-line addiction
· offer age appropriate sex-education during Healthy Living Week
· dental check-up and teaching proper brushing technique and oral hygiene
Question was brought up about why the school does not have a height and weight check for the kids each year. The reason is that this can have a bad stigma among students. The school would rather encourage a healthy lifestyle – getting plenty of exercise and eating healthy. Instead the school asks the parents to get health checks for their children individually and make sure their immunizations or up to date.
English Tea Party: This will be offered to JK-2nd graders and their guests following the elementary afternoon viewing of the “The Secret Garden” on April 21st. The children will have the chance to meet the cast from the play and get their autographs. The PFA Tea Party committee has plans to set up the cafeteria to resemble an English Tea house. Participants will be served tea, juices, and snacks such as scones with jam, fruit, egg and cucumber sandwiches. As the party is to take place during Healthy Living Week, the committee is focused on offering healthy snacks as much as possible. Help is still needed to purchase supplies including tablecloths, flowers, drinks, fruit and ingredients for the sandwiches, and to help with preparation and set-up. Please contact Irene Chai at 2319-6765 or by email: irenechueh@yahoo.com.sg if you can help out in any way.
Classroom Representatives: PFA would like those currently serving as classroom representatives to continue serving next year. If for any reason you are unable to do so, please contact Irene Chai. Anyone new who is interested in becoming a representative is also encouraged to contact the PFA presidency. Elections for any new representatives and a new secretary will be held at our next PFA meeting.
Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns. We thank you for your support of the PFA and look forward to seeing you at our next meeting.
Sincerely,
The PFA Presidency
