Now I am the Curriculum Director as well as being in charge of the school's accreditation through WASC and the staff professional development. I also coach the middle school girls volleyball team and teach a French elective class to middle school and high school students. My husband, also an SYIS teacher, and I have been married for one year. In my spare time I love to read, scrapbook and spend time with my husband and other friends.

Before joining this school, I worked in Shenyang Shangri-La Hotel as an Income Auditor for about 5 years. After that I worked at SYIS and is currently on my 6th year. I started working as a Purchasing Manager on October 2005 and moved to Finance Department as a Finance Manager on April 2008 until at present. I am glad to work at this school and I will try my best to serve staffs and students as well. I like playing badminton, it always brings me happiness and relaxation.

After seven years in Shenyang, it’s still astounding to live in this modern city with such an ancient history. Before coming here, I taught in schools at both elementary and secondary levels and was an adjunct ESL instructor at a private college in the US. My husband and I lived and worked in Bangladesh for two and a half years just prior to our move to China. I enjoy coordinating the SYIS English Support program and love teaching English Support classes to fourth and fifth graders within a multicultural environment. I like Beijing opera, underdone brownies, and the writings of C.S. Lewis and Wendell Berry.

I am in my eighth year as high school science teacher at SYIS. Before coming to China, my wife and I lived in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where I held a college faculty position. Prior to that, I taught at secondary schools in Georgia and Mississippi. We have seen so much change in China since we first visited in the summer of 1997. The sea of bicycles has been replaced by personal automobiles, and the abacus that was still used in some local stores when we first visited has given way to the magnetic card reader. However, the same hospitality that drew our hearts to China fourteen years ago is still very prominent today.

I grew up in a Military family, stationed mostly in Germany. I grew up learning to love travel, history, culture and later, photography. My dad is a Chaplain in the Army, my mom is a history and choir teacher and my brother teaches band, physics and is the head soccer coach of the guys’ varsity team in Florida. Shortly after third grade we moved to Cincinnati where my dad took a pastoral position in a local church. I attended a Classical school in elementary and Jr. High and a local public High School. After graduation, I attended Cedarville University in mid-western Ohio, where I studied middle school education with an emphasis in English and Social Studies. In high school and college, I was involved in band, choir, and orchestra. My hobbies include singing, playing flute, photography and dancing. I love movies and have been known to quote them when the opportunity presents itself. I have a passion for history, culture, music, travel, learning new things and my family. I am so excited to teach at SYIS!

Melanie Gagnon, High School English/French Teacher

Melanie Gagnon hails from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where, contrary to popular belief, she did not grow up in an igloo. Born to two French Canadian parents, Melanie is fluent in both French and English, and has picked up a decent knowledge of Spanish. She completed an Honours Bachelor of Arts at Glendon College, York University, double-majoring in French and English and went on to earn a Bachelor of Education at the University of Windsor, specializing in teaching English and French to students in grades 7-12. She has also recently completed her Master's. Melanie has worked at the University of Toronto Schools, a private school for gifted children, she has taught both night school and summer school English courses and has also done some short and long-term substitute teaching. In her spare time, Melanie loves to write and run, though not at the same time.

We have just had our first child and our looking forward to being parents. My love for teaching comes from my desire to see students think for themselves; to not simply take things at face value, but to dig deeper and really test and discern what they are taught, see, and hear in our world today.

I, Rhonda E. Carroll, have been teaching here in Shenyang for 2.5 years. Prior to living in ShenYang, I lived and taught in ChengDu, Sichuan Province at ChengDu MeiShi International School. My prior teaching experience ranges from teaching at an educational institution of "The Book," as well as teaching at William Jessup University in Rocklin, California where I taught subjects as Social Cultural Foundations of Education and Psychological Foundations of Education, in the Teacher Credentialing Program.
My family lives between California and Georgia. I am the third of five siblings. In my spare time, I like to read. As an author of five books, I like to write books. As a recording artist of two of my own CD's, I also like to write and record music. I believe that these active creative elements in my personal life, assists in my creative teaching practices.
I am enjoying living here in Shenyang, learning the language and the culture. I anticipate being in China for quite a while.

My family and I came to live in Shenyang about 10 years ago. We were pleasantly surprised by the opportunity for our five children to attend the Shenyang International School (SYIS). Four of my children are graduates of SYIS. SYIS prepared them very well for their college educations in the United States. We were so thankful for the quality teachers and education that each of them received while attending SYIS.
Prior to living in Shenyang, I was employed for 18 years by Lockheed-Martin Corporation in Fort Worth, TX. Over the past 10 years, I have taught Chinese and Korean adults conversational English. Now I am looking forward to teaching students at SYIS.

My husband, daughter and I are beginning our third year in Shenyang. My daughter is a Senior in the high school at SYIS and busy preparing her university applications.
Before coming to Shenyang, I worked in the University of Missouri Intensive English program, preparing students for the TOEFL and academic life in the US. Before that, I worked for the Asian Affairs center at MU, working with visiting scholars from Korea and China. I've also taught refugees and immigrants as an adult English instructor and worked several summer programs with students from Japan, Thailand and Taiwan.
I have also worked at a parent educator for the St. Louis public schools and taught Montessori pre-school and kindergarten for many years. I like all aspects of teaching from the very young to adults.
In my spare time, I like to read and knit. As a family we like to travel. One of our greatest joys is our foster son who has lived with us for one year.

I enjoyed volunteering at the Joni&Friends first family retreat in China in October 2010.

I had two dreams when I was little. First, I wanted to be a teacher, second, I wished I could be a doctor. I gave up my doctor dream since I am afraid of blood. Shenyang is my hometown and I have been working at SYIS for 11 years. I have had a variety of jobs at school like:middle school teacher assistant, Chinese teacher, high school TI, art TI, music TI, 2-3 Grade TI, 2-3 ESL TI! I have taught the students from Kindergarten all the way through 12th Grade. The more I get closer to the students the heavier I feel my work is as a teacher. I wish I could be a good teacher in both teaching area and real life. I have a lot of hobbies, such as reading, writing, singing, traveling, taking pictures, talking to friends with coffee in hand , hanging out with friends, creating games. I am so blessed to be entering my second year of teaching at SYIS! My position as the K-12 music teacher allows me the privilege of knowing almost all of the students in our school. In addition to teaching K-5th grade music classes twice a week, I also teach music to the Chinese Kindergarten and 1st grade next door. I also enjoy directing both the high school and middle school choirs and preparing them for our annual concerts. Outside of the music classroom, I am the assistant drama director and advisor to the high school National Honor Society.
I am from a small town in the Midwest, but I am learning to love city life here in China! When I find free time, I enjoy taking pictures, scrapbooking, playing piano, singing, practicing violin, spending time with nationals, and visiting the nursing home with other staff members.

I currently teach PE at SYIS and my passion is to teach and equip our students the skill set to be successful in sports. Before coming to China, I was a coach for various sports in Fiji, Marshall Is, Yap State (FSM) and Guam in various schools for the last thirteen years. During school breaks I love to work with schools and youth groups, by training and equipping their leaders. My hobbies are exercising through any sports that are there to play either with colleagues, students or my wife, watching rugby or other sport games, and being fixated by really great TV dramas like 24 and Lost. With my dear wife and life partner, Grace, we have three children, David (in Guam) and two daughters, Daniella and Deborah (with us in China). At present, we are fostering a handsome baby from Shenyang, (Xiao Ming Devine). I also enjoy the English corner talks with students from nearby universities in Shenyang and love to engage with seekers and skeptics in theological conversations and debates.

I studied and worked in Colombia and Germany for many years, and have been a teacher for more than 12 years. The last 3 years I lead my own business as a Life and Business Coach. Now I’m in charge of setting up all the German Program at SYIS, and also teaching German at elementary and middle school. I’m here with my wife and my two daughters. I started working with SYIS in 2004. I used to be a teacher intern for 4 years, and in 2010 I became a Chinese teacher for foreign teachers. I have had two years experience of overseas life in Singapore, which has really helped me understand why language is so important and useful for people who live abroad. My passion is to help foreign teachers to have the language skills to be able to live, understand, and love China. In my spare time I enjoy swimming, listening to music, and I love traveling.
